Have a great day!
Hey there. I'm Liz Florentino, a.k.a., Survivor on a Mission, and author of ANGELS, BULLIES, & BRICK WALLS: Lessons from Surviving Medical Malpractice.
I won't go into all the details here, but I was negligently injured by an abusive surgeon in 2021. I am one of the lucky ones who has mostly healed thanks to incredible doctors, other Angels Among Us, and an annoyingly strong will to live. (If you read my book, you know why I'm saying "annoying.")
I discovered to my dismay, as millions before me have, that I was faced with a terrible triad: the negligent doctor, an unaccountable hospital & other unaccountable systems, and discriminatory laws that prevented me from accessing our justice system.
That was all too much to swallow.
But here I am, having had incredible luck after much pain and despair, still kicking. And now I'm on a mission. Actually, better said, I'm on a mission - to spark a mission - for people to join in a grassroots awareness campaign for patient rights. I've named it #ReformTortReform (See the video below).
Tort reform laws discriminate against the injured by purposely creating hurdles to accessing the courts and/or receiving compensation deemed fair by a jury trial. The campaign is about the necessity for acknowledgment and fair rights for those who experience injury from medical negligence and are otherwise left to pick up the pieces on their own. Let's see what we can achieve, including envisioning new and more humane approaches, when we add our voices to a cause that we are all vulnerable to.
Time is of the essence as countless victims succumb each day to the brick wall treatment I had, so how about we send this campaign for decency and patient rights viral? This could get interesting if you and others join in to help bring the imbalance of power out of the shadows and into the light. Start today by telling one friend what tort reform is, or by sharing the informational video on your social media.
The subjects of injury and injustice are the opposite of fun, but I am committed to keeping things as light and inspiring as I can so that you won't walk away feeling worse than when you got here. ;) I am also interested in exploring other sub-topics within this site like patient advocacy, patient safety, the healing journey, and finding one's voice and center again after experiencing trauma - something I am still working on but thankfully doing much, much better.
